The mission of The Story Train is to enable all students to recognize, believe, desire, and work to own this statement in a generous environment filled with encouragement, support, education, empathy, humor, and kindness. Who We Are The Story Train is a literacy development program which began in 1993 by Sharen Cacciatore. The program initially was simply storytelling at libraries and elementary schools. Gradually, it became a story writing program for children. Then, story writing in classrooms evolved into a non-profit entity which included a television show on local cable TV. The show consisted of showcasing students, their stories and illustrations, to their communities. This was done as a field trip to the local cable studio in whatever town The Story Train was working in. The program was well-received and nominated twice as "Best Educational Programming For Children" in the Massachusetts Cable Commission contest. In September 2000 Ms. Cacciatore (also known as Mrs. Catch-a-story) opened The Story Train Literacy Center.
